Insulated Roof & Wall Panels

Bright Future for School's
With Kingspan Wall-Lite

28 March 2011

Sporting pupils at a new all-through school can look forward to a bright future following the opening of their state-of-the-art Sports Hall, where a revolutionary architectural wall panel from Kingspan Insulated Panels has been used to make the most of natural light and reduce CO2 emissions.

The sports facility is part of the ambitious £25 million North Inch Community Campus development in Perth, which was built to include features such as teaching wings orientated to allow maximum daylight. At the sports hall which will be used by pupils of St John’s RC Academy and community, energy savings will be made through the use of Kingspan insulated panels for the wall envelope – a combination of Kingspan KS1000 Micro-Rib in a Pearl, Kingspan Spectrum finish and translucent Wall-Lite, while Kingspan KS1000 FL panels in a blue finish were used extensively throughout other areas of the School. All Kingspan panels were installed by Procladd (Scotland) Ltd, whose Joint Managing Director Brian Crookston explained:

“We have installed the Kingspan range of roof and wall panels on many successful projects ranging from 50m² to 10,000m² during the last 20 years. From a design and detailing point of view, this was a relatively straight forward project and was handled by our own in house design team. The original scheme for the sports hall combined cladding panels with glazing, but during design meetings Procladd offered Kingspan’s integrated Wall-Lite as an alternative to provide both enhanced weathering and simplified construction detailing. Following submission of samples and drawings, this was then adopted into the design.”

A spokesperson for Perth & Kinross Council, who commissioned the school, commented on the use of Kingspan. “Perth & Kinross Council, within their design requirements, recommended that their new community campuses be designed to a high standard with a clear community focus and a unity and identity. The Kingspan insulated panels, as part of the exterior façade design, achieved these aims for the North Inch Community Campus and St John’s Academy.”

All Kingspan insulated panels provide high levels of thermal performance with achievable air-tightness of 2m³/hr/m² at 50 Pa or better. In addition, the innovative Wall-Lite panel provides natural daylight without compromising a building’s thermal efficiency, offering excellent interior levels of natural light while maintaining U-values of 1.26 W/m²K.

The panels are factory pre-engineered to provide a single-fix, easy-to-install solution for new build or refurbishment projects.

The sports hall at the North Inch Community Campus houses badminton courts, indoor basketball, netball, volleyball, cricket and hockey; as well as trampolining and gymnastic facilities. While secondary pupils enjoy their new sports arena, primary and nursery classes will remain in their current buildings until Phase 2 of the work is completed in autumn 2011. The new community campus encompasses the formerly separate schools on one site and will also be a hub for community facilities.

The majority of Kingspan products have an ECOsafe insulation core, containing no CFC’s or HCFC’s with a low Global Warming Potential, achieve an “A” or “A+” rating according to the Green Guide to Specification and are available in FIREsafe LPCB insurer-approved form for assured fire performance. They are also fibre-free, removing the risk of loose fibres being released and causing irritation.
