The contemporary curved profile of the Kingspan Curvewall architectural wall panel is making an impact at new student halls of residence in Dundee, providing a striking silver finish and adding to the accommodation’s comfort and safety.

Opal 1, the £20.8million, 498-bedroom design and build development by Ocon Construction at the University of Abertay Dundee, has been clad with 2,000m² of Kingspan Curvewall in Spectrum Silver, which combines an aesthetically pleasing wall solution with all the performance benefits of an insulated panel system.

Certified ‘ECOsafe’, the panels can achieve a Green Guide 'A+' rating for BREEAM. They have a non-deleterious, environmentally sustainable, PIR core with zero ODP, which, though light in weight, can provide lifetime insulation continuity and airtightness of less than 5m3/hr/m².

Kingspan Curvewall was suggested by external wall envelope experts, Keyclad, as an alternative to a built up system. James Evans, for the company explained why. He said “We were responsible for installing the panels. It was a very tight site, so all cladding was installed off mast climbers and was often distributed by hand. The light weight of the panel assisted with manual handling, which was essential given the circumstances, along with the benefit of a single component installation (as opposed to a built up system), which meant less passes by the mast climbers.”

Importantly for multiple occupation accommodation, Kingspan Curvewall panels are FIREsafe approved by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) to LPS 1181 Grade EXT-B; and panel facings, both internal and external, are Class 0 in accordance with Building Regulations. The panels also help to reduce passage of sound having a predicted single-figure weighted sound reduction Rw = 24dB.

Kingspan Curvewall is available in a range of solid and metallic colours and is suitable for both horizontal and vertical applications, offering inspiring design choices for architects and specifiers. The panels integrate easily with doors, windows, glazing, louvres and traditional construction materials; and because the pre-engineered system offers a single component, single fix installation, considerable construction benefits can be gained through a greatly accelerated build time and removal of the wall envelope from the critical path.

Opal 1, constructed on the site of former jute industry workers’ tenements in Parker Street, between the Blackness conservation area and the main university campus, has been built to hotel standards with en-suite accommodation that can be utilized during holidays as conference accommodation. The first students took up residence for the 2010/2011 academic year and the development now has 100% occupancy.

Kingspan Insulated Panels also produces both standard and bespoke fabrications including ancillary components such as gutters, louvres and flashings, as well as safety and fall restraint systems such as Kingspan Saferidge and Safetraxx.
