A purpose built Audi Dealership being the first of its kind to achieve BREEAM excellence through a modern design included insulated architectural wall panels from Kingspan.
Architects, Stubbs Rich, used passive design principles to reduce energy load on the building and specified only “A-rated building materials” in order to achieve the ‘Excellent’ rating.
The wall envelope for the £3.7m dealership in Coulsdon, South London comprised clear Kingspan Wall-Lite panels integrated with Kingspan’s architectural wall panels in a micro-ribbed, silver metallic profile.
Kingspan Wall-Lite, a UV resistant, translucent panel that allows light transmission without loss of thermal performance, was integrated to the north of the building to provide thermal protection and prevent unnecessary solar gain, while still allowing good levels of light into the workshop area. The areas of metallic MicroRib not only added an ultra-modern feel to the building but also contributed to its energy conservation.
Installation of the panels fell to sub-contractors, BC Roofing Ltd. Ian Catterall, Managing Director of the company said:
“We’ve worked with Kingspan a lot. The panels are very straightforward and quick to install and we’ve always had good back-up from the company. From our experience they’re also very reliable once installed.”
This reliability comes from a rigorous off-site construction process, which delivers a pre-engineered product to site ready for installation. The panels offer highly efficient thermal performance with low air leakage of 5m3/hr/m2 or better and reliable insulation continuity. The risk of interstitial condensation is also reduced due to the fact that there are no cavities, gaps or cold bridges.
The ever growing choice of profiles, finishes and colours included in the Kingspan insulated panel range offers unlimited opportunities for creative design; and Kingspan Wall-Lite opens up new possibilities for light-filled, energy efficient buildings of distinction.
High performance, galvanised steel floor decking from Kingspan Structural Products was also used in the construction of the state of the art dealership. Multideck V60 was used for the composite floor slabs, providing an efficient concrete cross section which uses up to 20% less concrete than other decks.
The majority of Kingspan products have an ECOsafe insulation core, containing no CFC’s or HCFC’s with a low Global Warming Potential, achieve an “A” or “A+” rating according to the Green Guide to Specification and are available in FIREsafe LPCB insurer-approved form for assured fire performance. They are also fibre-free, removing the risk of loose fibres being released and causing irritation.
