Main contractor Deane Roofing & Cladding Ltd was briefed to replace the existing tile effect across the 2,146mroof area at the school. The work needed to be completed rapidly, within the eight week school holiday, to minimise disruption to children and staff.

Noonan Moran Architects were also brought in to consult on the project, with Albert Noonan describing the unique solution that Kingspan Topdek provided for the low pitch roof of the building: "The suitability of the product for a low pitch application together with the ability to suitably seal around the many roof light upstands was a major consideraton. In addition, the visual appearance of the finished roof was very important to us and the combination of the roof panels with the additional standing seam feature was a significant factor in selecting the product."

The Topdek roofing system is a unique factory pre-engineered roof deck, made of a high performance single-ply PVC membrane with insulation and a trapezoidal steel deck, all in a single component. With a single-fix installation and self-coring 'one-step fix' fastener solution, Topdek allows for rapid and efficient build. Topdek also provides up to 50% faster installation times compared with conventional multipart membrane decking systems, which in this case allowed for an earlier fit out and project completion.

The school houses approximately 400 pupils and staff, so it was also imperitave that the chosen product met fire safety regulations. Topdek has recently achieved FM Global approval, and is also approved by the Loss Prevention Board (LPCB) to LPS1181 Part 1, EXT-B for roof applications. The benefits include stable protective char, no flash over, no flame spread and no flame propagation, placing Topdek near the top of the class of  fire prevention safety.

Topdek is pre-engineered to provide total insulation continuity. This makes it resitant to attacks from mould, fungi and mildew, common issues for outdoor spaces. These weather resistant properties were another reason Topdek was chosen for this build.

Noel Deane, of Deane Roofing & Cladding Ltd, explained: "Kingspan is one of our preferred suppliers because we know their products are the very best, and the technical support we receive from them is exemplary. The fact that Topdek has fantastic fire credentials, weather resistant properties and was compatible with the multiple upstand rooflight penetrations we had to retain made it an ideal system to use on this build. The additional standing seam feature also ensured a great finish was achieved to the roof refurbishment as a whole."
