Scout Hut Undergoes Conversion from Draughty Den to Cosy Cabin
The premium Optimo insulated wall panels became available during the redevelopment of Sandy Park, home of the Exeter Chiefs rugby club. The 7m deep extension to the West Stand is the first phase of a five-year plan to redevelop the ground; increasing capacity by almost 10,000, providing more hospitality space and extending the grandstand.
As well as re-using some of the Optimo panels installed on the original elevation during a 2007 refurbishment, the build features new Mini-Micro and Micro-Rib profiled Architectural Wall Panels in silver, which were subtly integrated to add contrast when set against the rest of the flat façade.
“While we were able to reuse many of the original panels we installed back in 2007, some did not fit the new design for the extension” explained Andrew Bassett, Managing Director, Progressive Systems Ltd, the cladding contractor on the project. “We knew local cub scout leader Neil Day because he is Director of Operations at Thatchers Cider, who are an important client of ours. When he approached us to ask about using the redundant panels to replace the draughty old scout hut, we were happy to help.”
Staff from the scout troop assembled the hut themselves, with support from some of the team at Progressive Systems.
Mark Harris, Divisional Building Technology Director for Kingspan Insulated Panels said “We’re delighted that the displaced panels from the old elevation are being put to such good use, and that the scouts from Wedmore probably now have one of the best insulated scout huts in the whole of the UK. We are always keen for redundant panels to be reused, and this is one of several projects that we have been involved in. Regrettably reuse is not always possible and when this is the case we help to ensure that the panels are fully recycled and landfill is avoided.”
